- *** Cat 'n Mouse 1.0ß2 ***
- by Mike Perry
-
- Cat 'n Mouse is a neat little card game for two players. Two decks are
- used, Deck A is a standard 52 card deck, Deck B is a 52 card deck with 4
- jokers. Deck A is split up, and a half is given to each player to form
- that player's "Payoff Pile". The top card of each "Payoff Pile" is
- playable at all times. The winner of the game is the first person to get
- rid of all the cards in their "Payoff Pile". Each player has a hand of
- five cards. At the beginning of the turn, if a player has less than
- five, they draw from Deck B until they do have five. If, during their
- turn, they run out of cards in their hand, they get five more immediately,
- and continue playing.
-
- Play goes as follows. The four piles in the centre are to be built up
- by value (no, suit does not matter) from Ace to King, when a King is
- played on a centre pile, the pile is shuffled back into Deck B for use in
- filling players hands. Play then starts on that pile again with any available
- Ace. The player can keep playing cards from his hand,
- payoff pile, or side piles (explained in a sec…) to the centre until
- they have no more plays, or do not want to play any more cards. At the
- end of a players turn, they can discard a card onto one of their four
- "side piles". The top card only of each side pile is available for play
- on the centre piles. Any card may be played onto empty side piles. If a
- side pile already has cards on it, though, the next card to be played on
- it must be of equal, or one lesser value than the top card. That
- is, only a 7 or 8 can be put onto an 8 on a side pile. If this seems
- confusing, don't worry, it is. ;-) Just kidding, it's real easy, I just
- can't talk properly. Note: You don't HAVE to put a card on the side piles
- at the end of your turn if you don't want to, you can use the "Pass" menu
- option to end your turn instead. (sometimes you won't be able to play a
- card on a side pile, and will have to use this option anyway).
-
- Aces and twos must be played before the end of a players turn if it is
- possible to do so. Jokers can be used for any value except Aces, they
- can also be placed on side piles.
-
- If both players become stuck, the winner is the player with fewest cards
- in their payoff pile.
-
- Menus:
- Game: this menu can be used to set the game to be two human players
- against eachother (although if you are going to do this, I highly
- recommend getting two real decks of cards and not using this program),
- or one human player versus the computer. The new settings come into
- effect with the next "New Game". "Pass" indicates that your turn is
- over.
-
- Piles: Peek enables you to peek at the cards in a pile. (needless to
- say, you can't use this option on payoff piles, or the deck).
- Count enables you to see the number of cards in a pile. (this is useful
- for seeing who is ahead, etc…) The count stays on the pile until you
- turn it off with the "Clear" option.
- Clear: turns off the pile count for a pile.
-
- Shortcuts: Holding down option while clicking on a pile will momentarily
- display the number of cards in that pile.
- Shift-clicking a pile does a "peek" on a pile (if possible).
- shift-option clicking a pile shows what pile type the pile is
- option-command clicking a pile shows what card is required to build on
- a pile (only valid on centre piles)
-
-
- One final note, just recently, I've found out that this game is also known
- as "Spite and Malice", or "Skip-boo".
-
-
- This program is FREE!!! Do not pay money for it. I am specifically
- referring to these Shareware companies that collect other people's work
- and distribute it for a fee. NO ONE may charge a fee for this game.
- I retain all copyrights, etc… If you have problems getting this
- program free for some reason, I'll email it to you. If you like this
- program, just grin a lot for no apparant reason, and freak someone out.
-
- This is a ßeta version, the actual release
- should be available in a few weeks. Due to an ironic twist of fate, this
- version of the program will only work
- properly on Mac Pluses, and Mac SEs, there is a small display problem
- with any machine above that. The game works fine, just some of the
- piles may be partially erased during the game. Kind of a bummer, yes,
- I know. Believe me when I tell you that it's very frustrating for me
- too. This bug will be fixed by the time the program moves out of ßeta.
-
- If you find any (other) bugs, or want to ask a question, offer a
- suggestion, flame, whatever… Send it to:

- This program is humbly dedicated to the person that taught me how to play
- this game. She knows who she is.
